We always enjoy driving and exploring various parts of Mexico. Even though we have made the above trip many times, we never tire of the scenery. Some friends do the whole trip in a day but we don’t like or recommend driving the dark for a variety of reasons, so typically make one overnight stop and take about 1 ¼ to 1 ½ days. Monterrey, Saltillo, San Luis Potosi or Matehuala are good stopping points- the first 3, interesting cities to visit.

For those who have not made the drive, they may have any number of misconceptions of a “backwards, 3^rd world, dirt road etc. drive” We hope the photos will give you a glimpse of the real Mexico.

Peaceful Canadian port thrives amid a Mexican drug war

About eight years ago, Burlington residents Julianne and Chisholm Lyons moved to a small village called Ajijic about an hour outside of Guadalajara. It is said to have one of the largest Canadian ex-pat communities in the world, with an estimated 8,000 Canucks. At 84, Chisholm is co-president of the Canadian Club. Robyn Doolittle Urban Affairs ReporterAJIJIC, MEXICO — Every inch of Julianne and Chisholm Lyons’ two-storey Mexican casa is adorned with mementos from their exotic travels. An antique door from Indonesia. Colourful photos of Thailand. Artwork from China. But tucked away in a little corner of their dining room is a keepsake from Canada: a framed photo of their old Burlington home, buried one foot in snow.

“Just a little reminder that we live in paradise,” said 80-year-old Julianne, a former Etobicoke city councillor. “Not that we would forget it.”

“Paradise” is not a word used by too many to describe Mexico these days, not with more than 40,000 deaths attributed to the country’s drug wars over the last five years. A couple of fatal shootings linked to organized crime happened just a few weeks ago in this otherwise charming lakeside village about an hour outside of Guadalajara on Lake Chapala.

The violence seems far removed from the world of the Lyons, who moved to Ajijic eight years ago, lured by its cobblestone streets, gentle pace of life and authentic Mexican vibe.

In fact, Ajijic has been luring snowbirds from the United States and Canada since the 1970s and is believed to be the largest concentrated community of expat Canadians in the world. The local Canadian Club estimates 8,000 Canucks — just over half of the village’s population — call Ajijic home most of the year.

Like everyone in Ajijic, the Lyons are defensive about how Mexico is being portrayed around the world. A recent story that appeared in the Dallas Morning News, which suggested cartels are moving in on the Chapala area, has the entire village incensed. Those in this retirement community make the eyebrow-raising argument that the vast majority of Mexico is safer than Toronto.

The Lyons’ home is in a gated corner of town, but most of the houses in Ajijic aren’t. Etobicoke resident Tom Gladney said a gate isn’t needed.

“People have this very wrong perception of Mexico,” said Gladney, 70, a former executive with Eaton’s. “My son will call and say: ‘How are you doing down there in that third world country?’ and I’ll say: ‘Sorry, can’t talk to you right now. I’m going grocery shopping at Costco.’”

Speaking en route to her morning yoga class, Torontonian Cece Girling, a charismatic former fashion businesswoman, said the cartel rumours are overblown.

“A few years ago, yes some businesses were getting calls — give us money and we’ll protect you. But that happens. The expats are protected because, well, the drug cartels don’t speak English and the Spanish just hang up,” she said, making a left-hand turn at the new mostly English-language movie theatre.

There are subtle signs of the Great White North everywhere in this community.

The supermarket imports authentic maple syrup. There’s an English-language library with 25,000 books. Satellite television picks up Toronto news stations. A popular local pub hosts Hockey Night on Thursdays. (No Canadian beer on tap unfortunately.) There’s even a Wal-Mart.

Every day here feels like late spring. Warm enough to swim — which is good since almost everyone has a pool — but cool enough to spend the entire day outside.

When 84-year-old Chisholm fell gravely ill with colon cancer, the couple didn’t consider for a moment heading back to Canada.

The Lyons pay about $1,200 a year to be part of Mexico’s socialized health care, but to battle Chisholm’s cancer, they decided to use the private system. Between the X-rays, biopsies, MRIs and eight months of chemotherapy — which included a doctor driving from Guadalajara to Ajijic each week to administer the treatment — the total bill was just over $30,000.

“The standard of care here is first-rate. The hospitals are incredible. The doctors are world class. I was very, very sick,” said Chisholm, a former corporate lawyer with an MBA from Harvard. His cancer is gone.

The cost of real estate in the Chapala area had been steadily climbing until 2010. Then the Mexican drug war exploded. Safety fears combined with the American recession has ground the market to a standstill. Sales are down more than 25 per cent.

It takes a certain kind of person to pick up and move to Mexico, so the cast of characters in Ajijic is predictably impressive.

There are world-renowned architects, designers, and artists, high-powered lawyers, a fashion editor and an Olympic figure skater. Engineers, entrepreneurs and corporate executives. Most are retired and eager to redirect their talents.

Donations from expats in Ajijic support about four orphanages, a school for deaf and disabled children, the Lake Chapala Red Cross, and various arts programs.

Nicholas Favian, a bartender at Salt & Pepper tavern who commutes to Ajijic from Guadalajara every day, says the expats are good for the area.

“The tourism is important for this area. They stimulate the economy. They go out more than locals and they tip more. A Canadian will go out four or five times a week. Locals will go out once a week,” said Favian.

And so far, locals have not been shut out from buying homes. The cost of real estate is high for the elaborate villas favoured by expats, but typical Mexican homes are still affordable and are passed down through the generations.

Because the cost of living is so much less, Canadians are able to afford luxuries they might not be able to at home. Mexican maids are paid about $1.50 (Canadian) an hour in Guadalajara. In Ajijic, expats pay about $5 an hour — still a fraction of the cost.

In Ajijic, about $420,000 will get you three bedrooms, four baths, a pool with a waterfall, fireplace, purified water system and fully-equipped gourmet kitchen.

For the Lyons, the only thing that’s missing in Mexico is their children. They have seven, plus four grandchildren.

“All I can say is thank goodness for the Internet,” said Julianne. “And you know they’re getting close to retirement too. We’re not pushing it. We’re not even mentioning it, but — well — wouldn’t that be lovely.”

GUADALAJARA - Elvis Stojko has made a quiet life for himself in rural Mexico, where nobody knows who he is or how many world figure skating championships he has won.

He is never asked about the Olympics, or his criticisms of men’s figure skating, or his controversial martial arts programs.

He’s left alone, and privacy is what he craves.

But he’s also gracious enough to grant a reporter and photographer a tour of his home, and he insists on picking them up at their hotel, even though he has to drive an hour into town.

Driving out of Guadalajara on a busy Saturday afternoon, Stojko navigates through the crazed traffic like a veteran cab driver.

It’s a pleasant trek, south towards the distant Sierra Madre mountains. About a half hour into the trip, the highway winds over a low pass into the town of Chapala, where American writer Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire in the 1940s. At that point, Lake Chapala, Mexico’s largest freshwater lake, comes into view. From there it’s a 10-minute drive along the water to the pre-colonial town of Ajijic (pronounced ah-hee-heek), Stojko’s home for the last 10 years.

Stojko loves everything about living in Ajijic, the almost perfect weather, the low cost of living and laid-back atmosphere. He retired from competitive skating in 2002 after a brilliant career, winning three world titles and posting numerous firsts, including the first man to land a quadruple/triple jump combination.

But he was often criticized for being a one-dimensional skater, a jump machine, whose artistry fell short of his technical feats, though, to his credit, he remained true to himself with his martial-arts themed programs. Stojko has a black belt in kung fu and an eclectic taste in music. His programs reflected that side of his personality.

When he retired from skating in 2006, he embarked on a spiritual journey, the proverbial searching for one’s self, and now he seems completely content living in Mexico with his wife Gladys and their Australian cattle dog Sunne. And other than the Nordic-themed tats on his arms and shoulder, the 39-year-old looks remarkably the same. He’s actually the same weight, 155 pounds, as he was when skated and he says it’s because of the fresh food he and Gladys eat.

“The food down here just makes me feel better,” he said, as he pulls into his driveway.

His home, in a gated community in the north side of Ajijic, is a stunning, hacienda-style structure with marble floors and every amenity, including satellite television, on which he can watch all the Canadian channels, a rooftop patio — with the view of the Lake Chapala and Isla de los Alacranes (Scorpion Island) on one side and the mountains on the other — and a decked-out office. It also has a meditation room, complete with candles, amethysts, statues of Eastern and Western origin, including a number of skulls fabricated out of rock, and a collection of Singing Bowls, which Stojko plays for his visitors. It’s quite remarkable, as he moves a wooden stick covered in suede around the bowls, the tone gets louder and more mellifluous.

Conspicuously absent in the home are reminders of his skating. The only award he brought from Canada is a silver medal he won at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, and he’s not 100% certain where to find it. He hasn’t turned away from his past, he says, he just doesn’t dwell on it and doesn’t need any ego reinforcement.

The couple’s back garden is magnificent, rolling down from the house towards the lake, about 1.5 kilometres away. There is a flowing fountain in one corner beside a stone path, which winds past lime, tangerine, orange and papaya trees, ending at a Palapa, an open-sided, thatched-roof cabana-like shelter, where the couple can enjoy the lake breeze protected from the sun while lounging on patio chairs. The manicured lawn is covered with limes that drop from a tree.

On one side of the Palapa is a banana tree, brimming with the fruit, a few weeks away from being ready to pick.

The back garden is surrounded by a stone wall, lined by trees, cactuses and flowered plants, and Stojko is eager to tell you about them all. The son of a landscaper, the skater once known as The Terminator has always had an appreciation for horticulture.

“I used all the money I made working for my dad on all my non-skating activities, like dirt bikes,” he says.

One of the joys of living in the Mexican countryside is he can ride his KTM EXC 400 motorbike into the mountains whenever he wants to ride. The bike’s parked in his garage beside, oddly enough, a state-of-the-art skate sharpening machine.

“The kids here who skate (Guadalajara actually has an ice rink) don’t have a proper sharpener, so I sharpen their skates,” he explains.

But his real baby is his Ranger RZR ATV, which he and Gladys (and sometimes Sunne) use when they drive to town. On a perfect sunny day, he takes his two visitors for a ride down the cobblestone streets of historic Ajijic — taking pride in the quaint restaurants and shops — and then along a newly refurbished waterfront park.

“It’s considered a tourist region,” he says of Ajijic. “But you blend in with the locals. It’s not like Puerto Vallarta or Cancun. It feels like you’re in Mexico. That’s what I love.”

Stojko first travelled to this part of the world in the summer of 2001 to visit a friend. He became hooked immediately.

“I was looking to get out Canada,” he explains. “I was tired of the cold and the (fast-paced) lifestyle.”

On the second day of the visit, he bought an apartment. After returning to Canada, he started selling off his possessions and in 2006, sold his apartment here and bought a home.

It’s not just the relaxed lifestyle and weather that keeps the skating legend in Mexico. A couple of years ago, during a show in Monterrey, he met Gladys Orozco, a former two-time Mexican skating champion and, as they say in the Brady Bunch, they knew it was much more than a hunch.

A year later, on June 20, 2010, they married in Las Vegas.

“People were like, ‘Oh my God, that’s so quick.’ But I knew,” Stojko says. “We’ve been married for over a year and it’s the same as the day we met.”

Stojko dated for years and was even engaged for a time back in 2005, but was wary of settling down. He wanted to make sure that he found the right person because his family life growing up was not ideal. His parents basically stayed together for his skating.

Gladys was an accomplished professional skater, having played the role of Gabriella Montez in the on-ice adaptation of “High School Musical” throughout Europe, South America, Asia and the United States. The happy couple still tour a little and help out at the rink in Guadalajara. Stojko’s Rock the Ice 3 show will be held on Feb. 15 in Peterborough, featuring former world champion Kurt Browning and Olympic medallist Joannie Rochette.

Mexico suits Stojko. There’s a magic to the place, though, to be sure, there’s also a tension in the air because of the drug wars that have plagued this beautiful land in recent years.

But that’s a sore point with Stojko, the fact that people outside of Mexico seem to have a perception that the entire country is dangerous and that there’s crime lurking behind every corner.

He insists that is overblown and that, other than in a few areas, it’s just as safe or dangerous as some places in the U.S.

“It can get a little nuts sometimes, like Monterrey,” he says. “But the border towns have always been a crazy. But when people starting talking to me about crime in Mexico, I say, ‘Hey guys have ever seen any statistics from Detroit?’

“Mexico’s not for everyone,” he adds, before bidding adios to his two visitors in Chapala. “But it’s a great country and they’re great people.”

Del Webb understood. When he conceived Sun City in Arizona, he realized that an important part of the appeal behind this retirement option would be the promise of community. Retiring to Sun City meant retiring among like-minded folks and never having to look too far to find company for dinner or someone to share a round of golf with you.

About 10,000 Baby Boomers will retire every day for the next 19 years. Nearly 12 percent of these (about 26 million would-be retirees) are considering retiring overseas.

If you’re among that group, one thing to recognize is that there’s no such thing as Sun City in most of the rest of the world. The formalized U.S. retirement communities that many of our parents opted for at this point in their lives don’t exist in the countries that today offer the greatest retirement advantages and benefits.

That is not to say, however, that it’s not possible to retire overseas among like-minded folks.

A friend who relocated his family from the United States to the south of France about the same time that we moved from the States to Ireland (some 13 years ago) once remarked, “You know, I think we’re doing this the hard way. Here in France, we’re scrambling to learn French so we can figure out what’s going on, because we’re always confused. We’re trying to make friends and to find a place for ourselves in a French country community where families have known each other for generations. We don’t understand French cultural nuances yet, so we’re committing one faux pas after another. And we don’t have any other Americans around to commiserate with, no one to show us the ropes. We’ve really jumped into the deep end of this living overseas thing.

“And you have, too, in Ireland. You aren’t struggling with a new language [in fact, my husband and I would have argued that we were!], but you’re on your own in a foreign community. You’re living and working and sending your children to school among the Irish. You’ve plopped yourself down and are trying to fit in among the local community.

“It’d be a very different experience, I think,” my friend continued, “to move as an expat into an ‘expat community,’ a place like Lake Chapala, Mexico, for example, where you’d be surrounded by other people just like you, other people who’ve already done what you’re doing and who could offer a word of advice when you needed one.”

Which is better? Assimilating into the local culture or becoming part of the American Dream abroad? It’s entirely up to you. There’s no right or wrong way to retire overseas. Understand, though, as you begin your retire-overseas thinking that choosing to “go local” or not is one of the most important and fundamental decisions you must make. For many, understandably, the promise of familiar company is comforting.

If you’re interested in the idea of retiring overseas but also like the idea of retiring to very familiar surroundings, where, specifically, should you consider? Here are two top choices:

Top Expat Community Pick #1: Ajijic, Mexico. Ajijic and the area around Lake Chapala, Mexico, hosts the most organized, developed expat community in the world. The Lake Chapala Society reports about 4,000 American and Canadian residents in Chapala proper. The Mexican government, meantime, estimates that nearly 20,000 expats reside full-time in the state of Jalisco, the region where Lake Chapala sits.

In other words, the path has been cut. Moving here, you could slide into a way of life not dramatically different from the life you left behind in the States. You wouldn’t have to worry about learning the local language if you didn’t want to. You wouldn’t have to work to make a place for yourself among the local community, because this isn’t a “local” community. This is an entire community of nonlocals. You could wander into the restaurant down the street anytime and find English-speaking companionship, someone to complain to about the bureaucracy at the Department of Immigration or the challenges of studying to take a driving test in Spanish. Retiring to Ajijic, you could make a very comfortable life for yourself in a place that’s exotic, beautiful, safe, and very affordable.

Friends who have taken this path live comfortably on less than $50 per day (U.S. dollars), including housing, food, transportation, entertainment, and in-country travel. They eat well, play tennis, socialize, and travel comfortably. As they put it themselves, they want for nothing.

Don’t misunderstand. Ajijic isn’t a retirement village. This isn’t Sun City South, at least not formally. This is a legitimate Mexican town that, over the past three decades, has attracted such a volume of foreign retirees that it’s become less Mexican and more foreign resident-friendly.

Top Expat Community Pick #2: Boquete, Panama. Boquete, Panama, is this country’s Gringolandia, as some foreign retirees in residence refer to it affectionately. According to Boquete’s information and tourism office, about 3,000 foreigners live in this colorful mountain town. Migration continues, and the number of foreign residents in Boquete is expected to increase to 10,000 by 2016.

What’s the attraction? Beautiful setting, good climate, straightforward pensionado rules (for all Panama), yes, but, mostly, the draw in Boquete, as in Ajijic, is the established gringo community. This is a place to come to enjoy many of the benefits of being retired overseas without leaving behind too many of the comforts and conveniences of American suburban living.

In one private, gated, residential community development I know in this region, for example, amenities include a golf course, stables, even a small central town created specifically for foreign residents; and construction, for both the shared amenities and the individual homes, is to U.S. standards, with U.S.-style finishes, fixtures, and fittings. In Boquete town itself, shops and services catering to the ever-growing foreign retiree population continue to open. In the U.S.-style restaurants serving American-style menus (featuring scrambled eggs for breakfast and cheeseburgers for lunch), you’ll hear all-English conversation at the tables around you and all-American music on the speakers. People you pass on the street will greet you with a wave and a “hi” or a “hello,” assuming that that’s how you’d like to be addressed and that you’ll reply in kind.

Visitors to these Pan Am games are in for a wonderful experience of athletics, and excellent venues throughout several parts of the State of Jalisco.(home of Tequila and the Mariachis).

Guadalajara, Jalisco’s Capital, and a city of between 4 and 6 million people is the hub of the events. Others take place in Chapala (30 miles south-on Lake Chapala- Mexico’s largest inland lake), Tapalpa and Ciudad Guzman –on the way to Colima and Manzanillo and in Puerto Vallarta and Lagos de Moreno all in the state of Jalisco.

While in the area, besides taking in your favourite sporting events, you will probably want to make time to explore both Guadalajara, with its old Colonial and modern character, and the Chapala and Ajijic (Lakeside) area which is home to the largest English speaking, foreign population in Mexico- some working but most retired and enjoying the best weather in the Americas, and so much more. Of course, the majority of the population is Spanish speaking or bilingual.

It just scratches the surface on some of the beauty, colour, events, activities and real estate that make this such a Retirement and Lifestyle Paradise.

Chapala, Jalisco (01/JUL/2011) .- Yesterday was the grand opening of a sightseeing boat on Lake Chapala, with the name “Batur”. A group of investors decided to “rescue the tradition” that existed in late 1800 and early 1900, when commercial vessels, including tourism, were the constant in the glass lake.

The construction and commissioning claimed about 12 million pesos, with a capacity for 200 people. According to Ignacio Vazquez, one of the entrepreneurs, “Batur” will open on weekends to the public: Saturday will be “set apart” for private, on Sunday, all walkers.

The individual cost per trip, which lasted two hours, will be 180 pesos (includes one drink). It will have two daily departure times: 14:15 and 17:15, and tickets will go on sale in the Chapala pier ramp.

“This is a very stale. (Lake) Chapala was a century ago and made boat rides him, so the intention is to provide an extra tourism. ”

For private events, it offers line 36360002, where you can request one of the three packages out there, ranging in price between 45 and 85 thousand dollars, for times of between three and five hours of walking.

Tourism minister at the Institution, Aurelio López Rocha, was present at the opening ceremony. He applauded the willingness of this group of entrepreneurs, because from their perspective, the boat will greatly help to rescue the boardwalk.

He added that its implementation does not create problems with the community of boaters, as the “Batur covers different markets and needs.”

Increased tourism in Chapala

Chapala, Jalisco (03/JUL/2011) .- Lakeside going for new expectations as to enrich the tourist product of its agents of development. Currently there are new measures in place, among which, undoubtedly the launch of the boat tours in groups, since this ship has capacity for 200 people, plus the start of efforts to build a hotel and a marina in that was the yacht club Ajijic.

This was announced by head of the Ministry of Tourism of Jalisco (Setujal), Aurelio López Rocha, who also did mention that they intend to increase the number of boats for tours to the Isle of Mezcala and elsewhere in the largest lake country, once the island mentioned in their environment is improved with the restoration of the old prison and the adaptation of a small pier that will work as a dock for small boats.

Also brought up the restaurateurs who have invested in better equipment for their business and they move towards a quality of their services so they meet the standard of Distinctive H.

The official said that input the beginning of activities of the boat is an investment to increase the supply of attractive, not only for walkers, weekend or holiday periods, but also for meetings and conventions market, so that now his challenge is to promote service among the metropolitan area of ??Guadalajara.

Rocha Lopez said that while demand for hotel occupancy on the shores of Chapala is seasonally, hoteliers consider it a good business and this it follows that expectations are optimistic, for there to be plans for new investments by of coastal businesses.

It should be mentioned that now the tourist boat (Batur) has rescued a century-old tradition and added as an alternative to other vessels: the 55-foot catamaran that runs Saturday and Sunday on the boardwalk Jocotepec, another village on the bank.

We are lucky and grateful to have a Rotary International Club right here in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. Currently our members number 44, and we benifit richly from a large number of visiting Rotarians… often five or more at each meeting!

We have two or more fundraisers a year to benifit: children’s charities, purchasing Library books, Computers, Scholarship funds, Potable Water, and Self Support Skills. Currently we are working on our largest fundraiser; our Cinco De Mayo event, selling tickets for a dinner, music and silent auction.

Hope House, Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos:

Donation of $41,578 USD for 15 pasenger van and Carpentry Vocational Training Program

Hope House is a residential facility for abandoned, abused or orphaned boys, ages 8-17. The training program, tools and workshop provide these boys with training and opportunities to learn skills to support themselves when they leave the facility. The Van provides transportation to school and medical services.

Schools in the Lakeside Community

Donation of $24,650 USD to supply five rural schools with libraries.

This Matching Grant Project far exceeded our initial expectations. We originally planned to supply four schools; instead five benefited from it. One daytime public school library was converted into an after-hours public library, and the State of Jalisco donated the constructon to add a second floor to the school and and additional 1,500 books and 3 computers. Now the City is looking to fund a Librarian position!

Tepehua Community Center, Chapala, Jalisco

Solar water heaters, storage facilities for the heated water, water filtration equipment and reverse-osmosis water has been provided for the neighborhood community center. The water system needs extensive replacement work; showers, faucets, toilets, etc. which is being provided by volunteers. In addition walls were painted, and we’re building hydoponic vegetable beds for the center, a vegetable garden with drip irrigation, fertilization, fruit trees and outdoor playgound equipment for the children. A family health clinic will open mid-June, and at that time the bathing program will start for families to have hot showers. We have also arranged for free inoculations for the children by DIF.

Fire Equipment, Chapala, Jalisco

Donation: $12,000 USD for used firetruck and new equipment

There are estimated 20,000 foreigners living here, and on weekends people visiting the area could fluctuate between 40,000 and 100,000. In addition to the number of people coming in on three state highways, house, warehouse, vehicle fires and spillage of hazardous materials is a concern. In addition to the fire truck coming in, we have provided 30 complete uniforms with: gear, equipment and a Jaws of Life.

Love in Action, Chapala, Jalisco

Love in Action is a facility for abused or abandoned children Year-round solar energy can be harnessed to provice heated water for bathing, reducing the cost to the shelter of propane used for heating.

Great Time to Buy Real Estate in the Ajijic – Chapala area

Buyers always like a deal. This just may be the best time to buy or invest in the Ajijic-Chapala,Jalisco, Mexico (commonly called Lakeside) area with one of the greatest concentration of American and Canadian expats in the world.

FINANCIAL

A Buyers’ Market: this area has between 2 ½ and 3 years of homes for sale at current buy/sell rates.

Exchange Rate: Most Property is in US dollars, therefore for Canadians, with the near par dollar (recently hitting 103 x the USD, the exchange rate alone may save you several thousand dollars.

Direct Deed Purchase: (Similar to the US and Canada). This area does not require property to be bought through a Bank Trust (Fidicomisio) as near the coastal areas. This saves several thousands of dollars at closing and another 10 plus thousand dollars over the period of the trust. There are no annual fees when you buy with a Direct Deed. (Escritora)

Property Taxes: Property taxes in Mexico are low. Typically they will be between $50 and $ 150 dollars per Year.

Housing Prices: Housing prices in the area are reasonable. New 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, small, well built homes are available for about $100,000 USD. Similar condos in a full facility Condominium Complex – excellent for those who are part timers and like easy living, range from $ 108k to 150k USD.

Amenities include heated pool, Jacuzzi, club house, fitness room, free laundry and much more. And of course there is a great selection of homes in the $150 to 350k range (300 +, homes). If you budget is higher, there are many more options.

Closeness to Major City: (Guadalajara)- 30-40 minute drive

Major International Airport: (Guadalajara) 20 minute drive

Ocean Beaches: (Manzanilla/ Puerto Vallarta- 3 /5 hours away.

US Border: 1 to 1&1/2 day drive- mostly on excellent 4 lane divided highways.

Many historical Colonial Cities: ½ to 1 day drive.

Foreign Population: For many reasons, this small Village area has one of the largest US/Canadian expat concentrations in the world. This brings art, theatre, sports, restaurants, clubs, Amenities, charity and volunteer work, medical and much more.

Weather: Would you like to live in shorts weather all year long? Snow and Sun “Birds”, those who want to beat the winter snow and cold or the summer heat and humidity, will enjoy the Lakeside weather that enhances that easy living, with no need of air conditioning and central heating. (This also reduces the cost of living, compared to a 40% increase in Canadian energy costs in the past 10 years.)
